Follow up Friday: Vegetable apron

I wrote about my trip to Ikea here. I found this nice fabric with vegetables on it. I saw the fabric on the website before my visit and thought about making a childrens apron from it. I found out that is quite easy to do. I will show you the results.

A quick search on pinterest got me some patterns for aprons. I combined this and this ideas. I went to Montessori elementary school so I'm all for doing it myself. Practically this meant that the closure at the waist and neck should close with Velcro so the child can use it themselves without asking for help.
I didn't have the waist and neckband in my stash so I made a ride to a store close by. There I found white material for this. I decided to line the apron to protect the clothes better and make it more sturdy. I used some white fabric for this. Here are the results.

This also became a birthday present. The owner is now proudly 'helping' his mother in the kitchen :-)

Craft for four seasons: Snowman

A craft edition of the crochet for four seasons this time. I got a pompom maker for christmas that I wanted to try right away. I also wanted some wintery decoration so thought a snowman would be nice. A really quick make actually! I still had some acrilyc yarn and made four pompomps. Two big ones made one really large pompom and two slightly smaller ones made a smaller pompom. I tied these toghether, glued eyes and some felt for the nose and buttons on. And there he was, mr. Snowman.

Reveal of the surprise project

I blogged about my WIP project here. In that post I showed you some of the materials I had collected. It was going to be made into a super hero outfit. With a reversible cape for both batman and superman, matching masks and a belt. A super cool gift for my nephew's birthday in january.

WIP Wednesday - Unicat shawl

Last week I showed you what Santa left me under the christmas tree. One of those packages held a nice skein of Unicat.

I decided to make a shawl for myself this time. It took me some time to figure out exactly what kind of shawl. A triangle shawl like the southbay pattern seemed nice but impractical for me. Thats when I started looking for other ideas. I found multiple ideas at this website. I thought a cowl would be a nice idea so i started to work on something similar to this link.

http://blij-dat-ik-brei.blogspot.nl/2015/12/en-weer-wat-unicat-inspiratie.html

The colours of my Unicat skein are a match to both my winter and summer coat. I thought the crochet with all these holes will not be verry warm so it will me more of a summer scarf. I'm making good progress but it's not going fast like during christmas break. Especially since I face deadline after deadline at work.

Crochet Rainbow Blanket

Sometime last summer I bought the magazine Simply Crochet (Dutch edition). I always like reading magazines during relaxing moments. I buy them for inspiration and not especially for the patterns. In this edition I found a rainbow granny blanket that appealed to me. A specific brand of yarn was mentioned but I decided to go for Stylecraft special DK.

I looked for the right rainbow colours quite some time. Stylecraft has a lot of colours. Some are a little to bright for my taste. I wanted a more vintage feel to the rainbow. I found colour recipes colour recipes at the Patchwork Heart. On basis of those I chose 11 colours and started making granny squares. I chose mocha for the blanket because I didn't like the contrast with white or cream like in the magazine.

I crocheted every moment I could. The squares go very fast so I soon had piles of them.

When I had a couple of rows of granny's I started joining them. I started with a join-as-you-go methode for each square. But I was making slow progress with a thousand ends to sew in. So I searched for other ways to join and found the continous join-as-you-go method. I liked that way much better and then I started working on both the squares and joining.

Soon this became a blanket to keep my legs warm during my crochet work.

After I joined all my squares (16 x 11 = 176 squares), I made an extra round with granny clusters in mocha using this method.  After that I lost my inspiration for the real edge. The blanket was put away while I thought about the edge. All the colours asked for a neutral edge. I decided to do two rounds of double crochet (UK) in a dark brown (Walnut), a round of single crochet in mocha followed by a round of crab stitch.

So here are the pictures of my blanket.

Crochet non-slip slippers

I made crochet slippers a couple of times now. For myself, my boyfriend and my mother in law. I don't have a pattern. I initially used several patterns but now I make them up as I go along. A short description of what I do:
  • I start with chains and then crochet in a continous spiral with increases until the front part is long enough.
  • After that I start making rows until the slipper is long enough.
  • I close the backside on the inside of the slipper.
  • Then I crochet around the edge in double crochet (UK) and then make rounds of trebles until the slipper is high enough on the ankle.

I use cheap acryllic yarn from the dutch budget shop Zeeman. But the slippers are not very sturdy. After a month or two the start falling apart, usually underneath at the toe. And I noticed they are very slipery especially on the staris. To make them last longer and less slippery I thought about treating them with non-slip material.

I searched for solutions for a while. Online I found a lot of tutorials with British and American products. Because of shipping costs they were not the solution I could use. But after I while I found out that my dutch online shop Wolplein (or YarnPlaza) also had this product. It took a while for my to do my order because of the minimum amount before shipping becomes free. When the package was delivered I wanted to try it right away. I cut my feed out of cardboard to prevent the latex from bleeding on the other side of the slipper. I used my own feet because it is not such a detailed thing (and I have large feet ;) ).

After that I made little ripples with the latex on the slipper. I used it on the whole length and width of the slipper. Maybe I can optimise this. I will evaluate how the latex holds after some use of the slipper.

Reversible tote bag

After my first tote bag I wanted to make another one and I found cool fabrics at IKEA to do so. I searched pinterest for a pattern and found the tutorial for a reversible tote bag on the blog of So Happy in Red. She has some pretty cool tutorials for both crochet and sewing.

I didn't make any pictures during the proces of sewing. It's hard to do so in these dark months. Therefore only one picture of the result.

I use my bag quite often and get some great compliments for the result.

Welcome in 2016!

Welkom in 2016!

Welcome in 2016! December was a busy month and january started equally busy for me. I had too little time for new stories on my blog.  I hope to post something more regurarly from now on. The christmas decorations are back in the attic and during the christmas break I had some great inspiration for new projects. I will write about those in the coming months.

Before christmas I had the idea to crochet a bedspread for our double bed. A giant project so it will take some time to finish that. My standard choice for such a large project is Stylecraft special DK which has a lot of colours, can be washed and is reasonably priced. I tried a small sample to see if I liked the colours I chose.

testlapje / test sample

After the test sample I started my  project with a very long starting chain for the granny stripe pattern. The white skeins were not in stock with my local yarn store so I ordered a large amount on wolplein, a great reason to add to my supply of cotton.

During a trip to Ikea I discovered some nice fabrics. I immediately had some inspiration for a projects so I bought two pieces of fabric. I restrained myself to buy some more. What my project is you will discover soon enough.
I also received some great gifts from Santa this year.
  • A nice skein of unikat, I will use this one for a project for myself.
  • Pompom makers, deze probeerde ik gelijk uit.
  • A pompom maker, I immediately tried this one!
  • The dutch version of this book for offline inspiration.

Did you also have a lot of inspiration during the holidays?
